Border Patrol Dune Buggy
The dunes south of Interstate 8 are very
close to the Mexican border. Be aware that
there is no fence and the U.S. Border Patrol
may not look lightly on riders that ride across
the border.
New Border Fence - 2008
Imperial Sand Dunes, west of Yuma, Ariz. – A stretch of border fence directly
south of where Border Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar was murdered by drug traffickers
in January 2008. Agent Aguilar was killed by the driver of a drug load vehicle
that drove unhindered into the U.S. across the Imperial Sand Dunes. The
Department of Homeland Security has now constructed fence along 359 miles of the
nation’s Southwest border.
From Gecko Road, take the Sand Highway south until it ends
above Dune Buggy Flats. Then to the Gordons Well I-8 overcrossing.
Cross bridge, and head east past Grays Well and Plank road.
Getting there from the Highway
I-8 to the Grays Well exit. Buttercup campground is on
the south side of the highway, to
the left.
