Sand Mats

Follow along as DuneGuide.com puts a set of Sand Mats to the
test this season. We visit dunes all over the west, and plan to have a set
available for use in our camp.
Sand Mats are constructed of high density polyethylene.
They will bend, but they won't break. They are one foot wide and four feet long
and one half inch thick.
Test #1: We had the opportunity to help a fellow duner that
was stuck pretty good. With a rental motorhome and a borrowed flatbed trailer,
he decided to try to go up this incline to get back to the access road.
Bad idea.

The Sand Mats were brought out to give them a try. We put them
in place and disconnected his trailer.

The bolts in the mat provided grip to the tires I haven't seen
with carpet or wood. Unfortunately, this motor home was high centered on the
differential, and back by the hitch. When the driver tried to pull up hill
(forward), the tires grabbed the mats and sucked them right under and through.
Not the mats fault for sure. There just wasn't enough weight on the tires.
In the end, we decided it would be easier to hook up a tow strap and pull him
forward.
