For our KFX450R project, we decided to try something a bit
different. We went with Fox FLOAT X EVOL
AirShox up front and the Podium X CoilShox
shock on the rear.
The first thing you will notice
about the FLOAT X EVOL AirShox is the lack of coil spring. The FLOAT X EVOL
AirShox have two air chambers that internally do the job of the coil over spring.
The first air chamber is the main chamber, which is used to adjust ride height
and roll/pitch stiffness. The second air chamber is the EVOL chamber
which is adjusted to control bottom-out characteristics.
Each set of FLOAT X EVOL AirShox
comes with two air pumps - one high pressure and one low for the two different
chambers. Changing the air pressure is comparable to changing out the
coil spring on standard style shocks. This simple way of adjusting gives these
shocks virtually limitless adjustment possibilities.
The innovative FLOAT X EVOL AirShox deliver an ultra-wide range
of externally adjustable compression and rebound damping with infinite
dual-stage air spring adjustability.
For the rear, the Fox
Podium X Coil Shock works very similarly to other aftermarket shocks on the
market. The Podium X is a standard oil-filled shock, charged with high-pressure
nitrogen and utilizing an external coil spring. It has a 47mm steel body, 5/8”
steel shaft, remote reservoir, externally adjustable rebound and dual speed
compression adjustments.
The Fox FLOAT X EVOL AirShox look great and anytime you have
the opportunity to shed a few pounds off your quad, it is a good thing. The
ride is very plush. The ruts from all the different vehicles are no
longer annoying. You obviously still feel the bumps, but they aren't
annoying like they were with stock shocks.
I had a longtime DS650 rider take a spin on the quad at Sand
Mountain and start jumping. He was very impressed - even flying 10
feet in the air and 60 feet.
The only con to the FLOAT X EVOL
AirShox is having to field
all of the questions other riders out in the dunes. They definitely
attract attention.
