National Recreation Advocacy Group Applauds Lawmakers Stance Against USFS De-Facto Wilderness Policy

POCATELLO, ID (April 21)--The BlueRibbon Coalition, a national recreational advocacy group, today applauded a group of 18 lawmakers who sent a letter to U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell challenging the agency's ability to manage lands as "de-facto" Wilderness. The Coalition, as well as recreationists across Montana and Northern Idaho, has been opposing an attempt by the U.S. Forest Service Region 1 to manage all Recommended Wilderness Areas (RWAs) in a de-facto Wilderness state, which bans all motorized recreation and mountain bike use.
BRC's Executive Director, Greg Mumm said "Only Congress can designate Wilderness, which makes sense because Wilderness is the most restrictive land management designation on the planet. It is not wise, nor legal, for any federal land management agency to establish de-facto Wilderness areas. We are pleased to see members of Congress remind the U.S. Forest Service of this important fact."
The letter was spearheaded by Natural Resources Committee ranking member Doc Hastings (WA) and Rob Bishop (UT), National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee ranking member. The letter noted "It is a baseless, twisted reading of the law to suggest that Congress intended to allow an agency to administratively declare an area as recommended for wilderness designation and then to manage that area exactly as if Congress had taken action to make such a designation."
The letter was at least partly in response to an earlier letter sent to Chief Tidwell in support of the Region 1 Policy. That letter was organized by Representative Raul Grijalva (AZ), Chairman of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands. Grijalva and 72 Representatives requested Tidwell expand its Region 1 guidance across all USFS managed lands.
Mumm noted that the policy suggested by Representative Grijalva creates a situation where currently authorized motorized and mechanized recreation does not preclude lands becoming RWA's - but then mandates those uses be all but eliminated. Mumm said, "Since the existing uses do not stop the lands from being recommended as Wilderness, then certainly those historic activities should be allowed to continue until Congress acts."
Mumm also stressed that a "de-facto" Wilderness policy precludes collaborative solutions such as those reached in recent land use legislation. "Such a policy presupposes the agency's desires on what is properly between Congress and the American people. By doing so, it eliminates the opportunity for motorized and mountain bike users to reach acceptable compromise with State and local governments, Wilderness advocates, and other stakeholders."

Toy Hauler Adventures is now live on the web

Announcing Toy Hauler Adventures, a consumer website dedicated to the research of new trailers, motorhomes and all the vast arrays to transport toys to places of adventure. The goal of the website is to keep the consumer informed of toy hauler trailers, products available, service and maintenance. We will also be doing research on tow vehicles, toys, aftermarket accessories for both and places to enjoy with family and friends.

With the RV market hitting such hard times many of the consumer research engines have fallen to the way side. The economy is not better yet so it is the perfect time to show consumers a way to improve and/or fix the products that they already own. The other thing that the Toy Haulers Adventure team has noticed is that the toyhaulers are getting older and things are starting to break. So the toyhauler owners are going to be searching for information on repairs and where to get service and/or parts. It will be Toy Hauler Adventures mission to provide such data.

The staff of Toy Hauler Adventures is made up by all end user writers and photographers with many years of camping and enjoying their toys. Headed by Terry Gluckman, one of the founders and editors of ToyHauler Magazine is a camper with almost three decades of enjoying the great outdoors. As an avid dirt bike, street bike, quad, boating and now side x side rider he has immeasurable knowledge of many different types of camping. From the deserts of the southwest, the rocks of Moab, beaches of Florida and the streets of Sturgis he has had interaction with people from many walks of life to help with his understanding of the market and what the consumer wants to see.
The world has changed a bunch over the last couple of years and so has the business of marketing. So the THA team has been brainstorming ways to produce a valuable tool for both the consumer and manufacturers. After some great discussions over the years we think we have some cutting edge new ideas to keep the consumers educated on new and old products and a place for manufacturers to showcase their inventions. So over the next few months the website will grow on a daily basis with new information and a lot of interactive components.

White Wash Sand Dunes Temporarily Closed for Filming in May

The White Wash Sand Dunes are scheduled to be closed from May 20-27, 2010, for a large filming operation. Originally, it was feared the Dunes would be closed for Memorial Day weekend, although the current date butts right up against the holiday, the May 20-27 closure leaves Memorial Day weekend open.
Please check for updates posted upon the Discover Moab website before planning a trip to the White Wash Sand Dunes. http://www.discovermoab.com/atv.htm
The closure of the Dune area, as well as some of the camping area, will be enforced by BLM, County and Utah Parks and Recreation law enforcement officers. The Dunes will be completely closed to public access; however, all the other roads and trails in the area will remain open for visitor use, including the recently designated Guys Trail to the Geyser, The Enduro Loop, Ten Mile Wash and others.
Duners may wish to make alternate arrangements should the filming conflict with holiday vacation plans. There are several alternative sand dune areas nearby. New Mexico's Farmington Dunes Vehicle Recreation Area is an option, as well as Utah's Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Sand Hollow and Little Sahara. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Idaho's own St. Anthony Sand Dunes. For information on other dune riding areas, visit the excellent DuneGuide.com website: http://www.duneguide.com/

For additional information, please contact the Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission at 435-259-4341 or tara@moabcity.org.

The April 16 field tour will focus on the "South Riding Area" of the NRA, located between Horsfall Beach Road and Tenmile Creek, north of Coos Bay. The field tour will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Old Bark Road Staging Area, located off of Horsfall Beach Road, and will conclude at 4:00 p.m. at the same location.
The following day, April 17, the Working Group will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the North Bend Public Library, located at 1800 Sherman Avenue in North Bend.
The meeting agenda will be focused on a review of designated route proposals for the middle and north riding areas, developed by the Working Group at two previous meetings, and the identification of potential designated routes for the south riding area.
The public is invited to attend both the field tour and meeting. Members of the public attending the field trip must provide their own transportation, which will need to be capable of traveling off road in the sand and have a current ATV permit. A public comment period will be provided at 11:30 a.m. on April 17.
This will be the fourth in a series of six meetings on the Working Group scheduled to take place over a one-year period. During previous meetings the group reviewed and discussed background information about the Oregon Dunes and the designation of routes in Management Area 10(C), discussed criteria for evaluating alternative OHV routes that could be considered for designation, and developed initial ideas for alternative routes in the middle riding area (Umpqua Beach area) and north riding area of the Oregon Dunes.
Individuals requiring alternate format material or accommodation, or who have questions regarding the April 17 meeting, can contact Ross Holloway, OHV Designated Routes Working Group Facilitator, by phone at 503-812-4056 or by e-mail at rholloway@inciplan.net.

Santee, Calif - MasterCraft Safety, the original manufacturer of innovative safety suspension seating and restraint systems, has announced its corporate office relocation to what has become known as the “Off-Road Motorsports Mile.”  The move by MasterCraft Safety is the second in the last five years and was necessary in order to accommodate the company’s continued growth and production capacity needs.

"Since 1970, MasterCraft Safety has been proudly manufacturing all of our safety suspension seating, restraints, window nets, and now our exclusive line of SFI approved racesuits and SFI crew fire safety apparel right here in Southern California," says company CEO, Robbie Pierce.

Where Little Hollywood Meets the Coral Pink Sand Dunes

Due to Kanab’s convenient location as a central hub, if you plan to visit the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Lake Powell, you should consider making Kanab your home base like many visitors from across the globe have done over the decades. With ample lodging, wide tree-lined streets, stately brick dwellings and friendly residents, recently “discovered” Kanab caters increasingly to the tourist and is decidedly unpretentious. It’s the real deal - a conservative slice of the authentic republican West built on a strong Mormon heritage, like much of rural Utah.
Isolated in the southwest corner of Utah’s red rock country, Kanab’s placid demeanor and impressive Old West architecture do little to convey its storied past as Utah’s “Little Hollywood.” The drive-by tourists headed for the big parks have little reason to suspect that roughly 300 mostly-western motion pictures and television shows were filmed in and around this small town of 3,800 from the 1920s to the present.
Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Dennis Weaver, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Dale Robertson, and the greatest actor of all time Ronald Reagan, to mention a few, plied their craft in the Kanab area. As a matter of fact, James Cameron, who directed “Titanic” and “Avatar,” is shooting nearby as I type, another movie mogul following on the heels of other movie moguls captivated by the rich tapestry of vermilion desert landscapes.
The glory days of Kanab’s rich cinematic past and the heritage of the American West are recalled and relived every year during the popular Western Legends Round-Up and Artisan Fair which shouldn’t be missed if you’re in the area near the end of August. The highlight of the bustling three-day event celebrates some of the silver screen’s legends and the industry, or “biz,” that employed many a local. Classic movie and TV celebrities like Clint Walker, Peter Brown, Cheryl Rogers-Barrnett and Neil Summers mingle with their admirers at breakfast and participate in panel discussions where they lead the faithful down memory lane.
At the Round-Up you’ll enjoy live music on two stages, gunfights and stunt shows featuring genuine Hollywood stuntmen, a quilt-show displaying over 150 beautiful quilts, a Junior Ranch Rodeo, a foot-stompin’ barn dance, mountain-man encampment, Native American presentations, cowboy poetry contests, a High Noon parade, a western film festival, and much more. They even run a herd of cattle down Center Street for that authentic touch and smell.
If you miss the Round-Up you can still get a taste of film history by visiting the free Frontier Movie Town set on West Center Street where you can step into the original barn used by Clint Eastwood in “The Outlaw Josey Wales” (1976), or peer through the gun-portals used in “Sergeants 3” (1962). I highly recommend it. Then, why not drive up Johnson Canyon Road for a visit - from a short distance as it is private property - to one of the oldest and most authentic movie sets in America built for “Westward the Women” (1951).
It’s not only movie buffs who congregate in Kanab; Model T and antique, luxury automobile enthusiasts by the dozens regularly converge on the town. And in late spring, over 300 retired greyhounds (the skinny fast ones) and their owners fellowship and reminisce on the good old days when their bony hounds raced in circles around the track.
If you’re a bona fide animal lover you should also pay your respects at the Best Friends Animal Society, the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary at Angel Canyon 5 miles north of Kanab off Highway 89. It’s a large operation run by a staff of over 400 dedicated to rescuing abandoned or abused dogs, cats, horses and other helpless homeless who have nowhere else to live out their lives in peace. It’s a noble endeavor of love that will surely move you, especially after you take the free daily tour.
A trip to Kanab wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, a perennial favorite of mine unknown to the masses and filmed in “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965). Located 20 miles northwest of town, the dunes are unique for their color - pink, orange, tan and cream that verges on crimson-red at dawn or dusk - and their proximity to forests of towering ponderosa and thick groves of twisted juniper.
The dunes were formed by strong winds that stripped the Navajo sandstone cliffs of the Moquith and Moccasin Mountains and deposited grains of sand where you find them today, piled to great heights or swirling low among the trunks of large trees - the living and the dead, stark skeletal remains splayed on the ground to rot or reaching for blue sky in one defiant last gasp.
Encroaching sands have swallowed the vegetation, spilling into rich habitat that houses a wealth of wildlife. Between bouts of fierce winds that shift and shape the elegant designs you’ll find the ground crisscrossed with telltale tracks of insects, rodents, snakes, coyote and mountain lion. Birds are everywhere.
On the east end of the dunes foot traffic is rare and off-road vehicle-use strictly limited; you’ll also find a small BLM-managed campground that is off-limits to the big rigs. If you plan to explore on foot, camp here for easy access to the sandbox, a short walk through pinion-juniper, ponderosa and silvery sagebrush. To fully appreciate the rippling textures, long shadows and meandering ridge-top lines, leave early to capture the glow of slanted light, or stroll through the evening’s warm rays and brisk winds that will bend and twist native grasses and send a million grains of sand bounding down deep gullies and over towering mounds. It’s an absolute delight exploring the pockets and folds and hidden, ever-shifting valleys of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. It’s one experience you do not want to miss.
