Students to participate in sand dune cleanup at St. Anthony

Source: Rexburg Standard Journal

IDAHO FALLS -- University students and other volunteers will work Saturday (9/26/09) at the St. Anthony Sand Dunes to help clean up the area as part of National Public Lands Day.

Students from Brigham Young University-Idaho's 5th LDS Stake in Rexburg will gather at the Snow Building at 8 a.m. and travel to the cinder parking lot off the Red Road near the Sand Hills Resort east of the main dunes complex.

Other organizations and volunteers are encouraged to join the students and staff in the effort.

The cleanup project starts at 9 a.m. and will end about noon.

Volunteers will cleanup litter throughout the dunes and sift nails and other debris typically left from campfires along the Red Road. The Bureau of Land Management, the agency that manages the dunes, will cap off the day with lunch and T-shirts for volunteers.

"We rely on all our volunteers to help us keep our public lands a nice place to play," says Bill Boggs, an outdoor recreation planner with the BLM Upper Snake Field Office.

"It would be too big a job for BLM without outside help."

The 5th LDS Stake of BYU-Idaho has been a partner in cleaning the dunes for more than 15 years, Boggs says. And since 1999, the students have participated in the Public Lands Day cleanup.

Boggs says he met with stake leaders earlier this week at the dunes to help coordinate the cleanup, and as they were leaving, student groups began arriving "in droves." Most of the student use comes in the fall and spring, he says. The student groups account for about 10,000 of the people who use the dunes each year.

Boggs says he is still calculated numbers for the 2008-2009 fiscal year of use at the dunes, but preliminarily, it appears use will be about the same as last year or up a bit. During the last fiscal year 2007-2008, use was 211,000, a drop from the peak use year of 2006-2007 when 240,000 people visited the entire dune complex.

Boggs says use has been up by about 3 percent over last year at Egin Lakes, but he's still gathering numbers on other use areas for this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

All that use results in trash that must be removed.

Imperial Sand Dunes - September Wash Road Update

Building a road in the desert in the middle of the summer is a daunting task. Temperatures well above 100 degrees fuel scorching breezes, and relief can only be found in the air-conditioned cab of a dozer. Miles of empty sand beckon the horizon, and grueling work begins under a glaring sun.
Construction of the "new" Wash Road began in July and continues today. This 24 ft. wide road is located directly west of the old one, and should be completed by the Halloween weekend. Funded with federal dollars, construction costs are held to a minimum by using volunteers, transferring BLM staff from other offices to temporarily help out, and hiring short-term workers from the local community to get the job done. Additionally, as much of the existing berm material next to the road is used in its construction to keep the costs down.
While the road may gets its initial boost from federal funding, maintenance of it will come strictly through fee dollars. Because of this, OHVs will not be permitted to travel on it in an effort to reduce future maintenance costs and increase safety. The road is designed for wash access by primary vehicles only.
When visiting the dunes prior to road completion, please respect construction efforts and stay away from the area. This increases safety for everyone, and helps ensure the project stays on track.

Businesses and spectators are encouraged to display their used goods to sell at this event. This is an open format expo.” To encourage attendance, AZ Expo Inc has also dropped the entry cost to $10, with kids under 12 free and have added limited free parking.

New Lightweight Wheel from ITP is Ready for the Dunes

ITP’s popular, proven T-9 series of spun aluminum wheels has been expanded with the introduction of the all-new Pro Mod line.

Highlights of the ITP T-9 Pro Mod include a head-turning polished finish, a double-rolled lip for excellent durability and ease of tire mounting, rugged yet lightweight .190 wall construction and the rigorous QS 9000 quality certification.

What sets the Pro Mod apart from the rest of the T-9 line is its classic off-road modular style and an angled outer wheel face. This unique design adds considerable strength to the wheel center without a weight penalty.

In fact, the T-9 Pro Mod is significantly lighter than its competition, reducing unsprung weight and rotating mass for noticeable performance gains.

This manufacturing makes the T-9 Pro Mod ideal for use on heavier ATVs and UTVs, applications where spun aluminum wheels were formerly inappropriate. The T-9 Pro Mod is available in a wide variety of bolt patterns for many popular 4x4 ATVs as well as side-by-side UTVs such as the Yamaha Rhino, Kawasaki’s Teryx and Mule, and the Polaris Ranger and RZR. The T-9 Pro Mod is available in 12x7 and 14x7 sizing with 4+3 offsets.

Since 1982, ITP has grown into the world's #1 ATV/UTV aftermarket tire and wheel source, and continues to provide a complete line of innovative tires and wheels for virtually all ATVs and UTVs. Great Sand Dunes National Park to be Featured on US Coin

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve to be Featured in United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters(TM) Program

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 -- The United States Mint announced today that the nation will honor Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado through its new quarter-dollar coin program. The Great Sand Dunes design will be the 24th to be featured on coins released under the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program, and will be issued in 2014.

Alpine tundra, forests, massive dunes, grasslands and wetlands are all protected as elements of the Great Sand Dunes natural system. Alpine lakes such as Upper Sand Creek Lake are part of the mountain watershed of Great Sand Dunes, and provide a dramatic contrast to the stark dunefield. Ponderosa pine trees were historically peeled for food or medicine by American Indian tribes; more than 100 of these living artifacts are found around Great Sand Dunes. It was established as a national site in 1932.

The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program is a multi-year initiative authorized by Public Law 110-456 -- the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. The Act directs the United States Mint to mint and issue 56 circulating quarter-dollar coins with reverse (tails side) designs emblematic of a national park or other national site in each state, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories -- Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. The quarters will be issued sequentially each year, in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site. The coins' obverse (heads) will feature a restored version of the familiar 1932 portrait of George Washington, including subtle details and the beauty of the original model.

The complete National Site Registry, which lists all 56 sites to be honored under the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program in chronological order by year, is available at http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/NSQuartersProgram/?action=siteRegister.

"These new quarters will honor some of our most revered, treasured and beautiful national sites -- majestic and historic places located throughout the United States and its territories that truly make us 'America the Beautiful,'" United States Mint Director Ed Moy said. "The designs will help reinvigorate interest in our national parks, forests, fish and wildlife refuges, and other national sites, as well as educate the public about their importance to us and our history."

Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner approved the list of sites recommended by the United States Mint on August 25, 2009, after consultation with the governor or chief executive of each host jurisdiction and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.

"The America the Beautiful series demonstrates our nation's commitment to the legacy of conservation while celebrating its natural beauty," said Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios. "Like other commemorative coins, these quarters will be a valuable addition to the U.S. Mint's collection."

"Since our Nation's founding, our coins have celebrated American ideals such as liberty and justice, our rich history and heritage, and the great Presidents and other leaders who have guided us," Salazar said. "I am pleased that these new quarters will now celebrate America the Beautiful, the spectacular natural wonders that are found in our national parks, wildlife refuges and public lands."

"From Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon to White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, America's landscape is blessed with unmatched beauty," U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who oversees the National Forest Service, said. "Our national forests are national treasures and honoring them is an important step in preserving them for future generations."

Beginning today, customers may sign up to receive the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters released each year through several new Online Subscription Programs -- a two-roll set (one roll of 40 coins with the "P" mint mark for Philadelphia and one roll of 40 coins with the "D" mint mark for Denver); 100-coin bag (P); 100-coin bag (D); two 100-coin bags (P and D); 1,000-coin bag (P); 1,000-coin bag (D); two 1,000-coin bags (P and D); United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set(TM); and United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set(TM), with the five coins struck in 90 percent silver.

To place subscription orders for these products, visit the United States Mint Web site at www.usmint.gov/catalog or call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468). Prices for these products have not yet been established. However, similar product prices are $32.95 each for the two-roll sets and 100-coin bags; $309.95 each for the 1,000-coin bags; $65.90 each for the two 100-coin bags; $619.90 each for the two 1,000-coin bags; $14.95 for the proof set; and $29.95 for the silver proof set.

Additionally, under the United States Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin(TM) Program, the United States Mint will mint and offer for sale silver bullion coins that are duplicates of the quarters. The bullion coins, to be struck in .999 fine silver, will be three inches in diameter and weigh five ounces. The fineness and weight will be edge-incused.

For more information about the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program, please visit http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/NSQuartersProgram/index.cfm. Created by Congress in 1792, The United States Mint is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage. Its primary mission is to produce an adequate volume of circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The United States Mint also produces proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and gold, silver and platinum bullion coins.

ISDRA Permits for the 2009-2010 Season

The Special Recreation Permit fee for the 2009-2010 dune season will remain at the same level as the cost for the 2008-2009 dune season.
The permit fee will remain at $90 for season permits purchased away from the ISDRA and $120 for season permit purchased at the ISDRA. The weekly permit fee will be $25 for permits purchased away from the ISDRA and $40 if purchased at the ISDRA.

A list of locations where the permits may be purchased can be found at: www.imperialsanddunes.net.

Season and weekly permits may be purchased from Worldwide Environmental Products by calling 1-800-832-7664.

You can also purchase your season permit from the ASA by going to our web site at:
http://www.americansandassociation.org/home.php
Or by calling our office at 1-888-540-SAND

A postage and insurance fee will be added for each permit purchased via the web site or over the phone.

If you are going to the Sand Sports Super Show you can purchase your season permit at the ASA booth and save on the postage and insurance costs.

The ASA receives 10% of the purchase price so this is a good way to help the ASA and get your dunes permit at the same time.
