Warrior Lifestyles to Debut New Travel Trailer

June 22, 2009 by Bob Ashley

The former general manager of now-defunct Weekend Warrior Trailers Inc. intends to create a line of private-label travel trailers designed by former Weekend Warrior President Mark Warmoth.“From a distance, we always had that in mind,” said Larry Broyles, president of Poker Clothing Inc., dba Warrior Lifestyles, Perris, Calif.
Warrior Lifestyles’ new Legend travel trailers will debut Aug. 7-9 at the “Dune Tour” in the Oceana Dunes near Pismo Beach, Calif., an event that should draw tens of thousands of outdoor recreationists to 5 1/2-miles of ocean-front dunes.“We aren’t doing any RV shows,” Broyles said. “We are going right to the consumers. We are going to give something to a new generation of RVers and campers.”To advertise the new trailers, Warrior Lifestyles will distribute 60,000 trash bags to people attending the event.
Warrior Lifestyles was founded in September 2008 two months after Warmoth shut down Weekend Warrior’s operation in Perris and returned its inventory of finished trailers and parts and components to its creditors. The company retails accessories and provides parts and service for Weekend Warrior — once a popular West Coast brand — Rage’n and Extreme travel trailers in stores in Perris and Lake Havasu City, Ariz.Warrior Lifestyles currently stocks about 20 new Weekend Warrior SURVs at the two locations that were acquired from the bank.“I helped liquidate the company so it was an opportunity to buy stuff during a distress sale,” Broyles said. “Right now, you can buy them back from the bank cheaper than you can build them, unfortunately.”
Warrior Lifestyles also acquired most of Weekend Warrior’s parts inventory and mailing lists. The company employs about 40 people at the two locations, about half of whom perform service on travel trailers.Weekend Warrior, founded in 1988 and credited with starting the towable sport utility (SURV) trend, at one time employed about 2,000 people in four plants totalling more than 215,000 square feet in Perris. The new line of trailers will be built in a factory that once housed Weekend Warrior subsidiary Extreme Warrior Manufacturing LLC in Caldwell, Idaho, under the direction of former Extreme President Don Day.“We are writing a business plan right now,” Day told RVBusiness. “We are going back after that cult-like following that Warrior has. Mark is designing the product for us, but that’s as far as his involvement goes. There isn’t anybody better in the toy hauler market than Mark. He connects with that buyer.”In addition to towable SURVs, Day said, the company also intends to build conventional travel trailers and fifth-wheels at some point in the future.
With an initial production schedule of five units a week, the first 400 trailers are to be sold at the Warrior Lifestyles stores in Perris and Lake Havasu City.
After that, Warrior Lifestyles dealers will be “factory certified” and need to agree to sell “branded consumables” such as Warrior Lifestyles trailer accessories, clothing and bottled water, much like Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealers who are an extension of the Harley-Davidson brand.“We are going to start up very slowly and build from there,” Day said. “We’ve been contacting dealers, and we’ve had a lot of interest for obvious reasons — that Warrior name is so strong.”

SandFest Coming Soon to Oregon Dunes

Source:
http://www.theworldlink.com/articles/2009/06/27/news/doc4a45a4eb28272307532684.txt

SandFest organizers are pulling down a mountain on the North Spit to give more people an opportunity to experience the revived dune event’s second year.
Well, not technically a mountain, but a whole lot of sand. Organizer Terry Wilmeth said they are dune deconstructing in order to put the event vendors in a place more accessible for people who lack sand transportation.“Everybody from town can walk around and enjoy the event and they don’t have to worry about getting to the sand,” Wilmeth said.
SandFest 2009 has two phases this year. The first phase will start July 4 and will feature an air show organized with The-Mill Casino, Coos Aviation and the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport. The “Salute to the Military” Air Show & Display will feature aircraft from World War I to the present, along with precision parachutists, aerobatics and a search and rescue demonstration from the U.S. Coast Guard’s Air Station North Bend.
The air show is a fundraiser for a memorial for Oregon National Guardsmen who died in Afghanistan when a flight was hit by Taliban rockets. The air show is expected to begin at about 11:30 a.m. and run to about 2:30 p.m.
People who can’t get enough of the planes can get up close to some of them at Coos Aviation on July 4. Coos Aviation line service manager Joe Pedro said a B-25 Mitchell bomber from World War II and two Korean War-era planes will be on display. The latter planes, a MiG 17 and a F-86 Sabre, will face off in a mock dogfight over the casino during the air show.Pedro said he doesn’t know yet what the price will be, but people can pay to ride in the B-25 while it’s at the airport on the Fourth. He said the air show was organized quickly this year, but he hopes it becomes something more than a last-minute bright idea for this Independence Day.“We haven’t had an air show in a long time,” Pedro said. “We are striving to get this to be an annual event.”
In addition to the air show, SandFest is bringing sand sports to town on Saturday and Sunday, with free supermoto racing at the Pony Village Mall. Wilmeth said the racing will be a chance for people who can’t venture out to the North Spit for the main sand party to get an idea of what it’s like. Also in the spirit of welcoming, SandFest will waive its entry fee for it second phase, a five-day dune event starting July 7.Wilmeth said vendors and all-terrain vehicle enthusiasts are all feeling the financial pinch this year, and organizers decided attendees needed a break. With camping and entrance fees, a family easily could spent $200 to $400 just to get into the event last year, and that didn’t include transportation, food and gas.“Just come on out and have a good time,” Wilmeth said. “Take that money and put it into the community where it belongs.”
Wilmeth said he still is trying to arrange a way to bring community members out on the sand, even if they don’t have ATVs.Wilmeth said Sand Dunes Frontier in Florence has offered tour vehicles to shuttle people to and from the sand event. The only problem is getting the sand buses to the North Spit. The huge vehicles can’t drive 45 miles on the highway, said Sand Dunes Frontiers owner Chuck Chapman.

With SandFest fast approaching, organizers are still trying to pull all the event features together, including the artificial movement of a dune.“We will take it to the last minute to make this an exciting event for everyone, even those without sand toys,” Wilmeth said.

All-terrain vehicle course gets down and dirty for Marines' safety

Source:
http://yuma.usmc.mil/?PgId=desertwarrior,2009,06,25,feature3

Story by Lance Cpl. Jakob Schulz

The station's safety department held its first all-terrain vehicle safety course to instruct station Marines on ATV safety and improve their riding skills at Fortuna Wash in Yuma, June 17. The one-day course taught six Marines how to safely operate an ATV as well as how to minimize their impact on the environment while riding. Since August 2002, the Corps has required Marines who ride ATVs to complete a safety course and to use personal protective equipment when riding, according to Marine Corps Order 5100.19E. During the course, the fundamentals of handling ATVs were stressed, with turning being the main focus. "If someone is going to rollover, it's going to be in midturn," said Andrea Beauh, course instructor. "We practice turning at high and low speeds in as many ways possible." The Marines were also taught to respect the environment by doing as little damage to the trails as possible. This course is especially applicable for station Marines, with many nearby off-road trails and riding areas, including California's Imperial Sand Dunes west of Yuma. In March, a corporal with Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 died in an ATV accident in the Imperial Sand Dunes. Between fiscal year 2000-2008, 69 ATV mishaps were reported throughout the Navy and Corps, including seven Marines or sailors who were killed or completely disabled permanently, according to the Naval Safety Center. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 50 ATV-related deaths were reported in Arizona and approximately 100 in California from 2005-2007. "This is a perfect example for why these safety courses are so important," said Lt. Col. Robert Skankey, director of safety and standardizations here. "All too often, untrained riders try to push beyond their limits and can't handle it." As many as eight students can enroll in each class. Currently, a course is conducted after all seats are filled. For more information about ATV or other safety courses, contact Belinda Henson at 928-269-5699.

OHV Registration Coming to Nevada - SB 394

Source:

Cox sees efforts pay off with OHV bill
Dennis Lee, Desert Valley Times
Charlie Cox saw all his efforts of the past year and a half come to fruition recently with the passing of Senate Bill 394, requiring titling and annual registration of off-highway vehicles.
The bill is slated to go into effect, July 1, 2010 if the OHV working group is able to raise $500,000 start up funds, otherwise it will become effective on July 1, 2011.
“The first thing I had to do,” said Cox, “is form the Nevada Off-Highway Coalition so that I could pull all the organized OHV groups together along with the environmental groups to find out how they wanted to proceed and what they wanted to get out of the program. And for the last year and a half we worked out all the tensions that existed and what was needed to get this bill past.“So, on the day Bill 394 goes into effect, it will require all off- highway motorized vehicles, including snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATV, dune buggies, and rock crawlers have an identification tag placed on the vehicle. This will cost around $20 annually to receive this decal. This decal will be needed if a person wants to ride on public lands, and if a person fails to acquire one, they will be fined.“The money raised from these fees will go into a dedicated OHV fund within the state, which will be overseen by an 11-member commission appointed by the governor, but selected from the names submitted by the stakeholders who put the law into effect.”These include the organized OHV groups, the Forest Service, BLM, and various environmental groups.“The monies will have to be used to promote and improve off-highway recreational opportunities within the state in a legal way, something that we don’t have at the present time.“The monies that go into a fund will come directly back into the sport for trailhead improvements, reconstruction of trails, general maintenance, construction of new trails, and law enforcement.”The startup funds will come from sales tax collected on those vehicles bought outside the state of Nevada.“When a person registers their vehicle, the sales tax has to be paid,” said Cox. “And the sales tax revenue that has not been collected amounts to millions of dollars. Collection of these sales taxes makes it fair for local dealers to compete with the out-of-state dealers. Often times, local dealers lose sales based on the difference of the sales tax.“Without a registration program there hasn’t been anyway to track it, but now with a registration program, people will have to prove they paid sales tax, and if they didn’t, then they’ll have to pay it.“This sales tax that has gone uncollected has an indirect benefit to the state, and the state has already figured this out. The Nevada Department of Taxation is presently going through a city’s records to find those who owe these taxes.“However, these monies have not yet been set aside for any specific funding, so we requested part of it for our start up funds.” (To date they’ve raised $300,000.)For those who feel like this is just another way to get more money out of taxpayers’ pockets, Cox explains,: “All the organized off highway motorized groups have been trying to get this on for the past six years.“They have been concerned with the small percentage of those individuals who do not obey the rules.“There still exist areas in the state that have been designated as open riding, but the federal government has mandated that one of the biggest threats to our wild lands is unmanaged OHV use.“So throughout the country there have been deadlines set on the federal level, beginning with the Forest Service. They have to be done by the end of 2009. This is then followed by the BLM, which has another year or two.“So, within the next couple of years, on a nationwide level, off- highway vehicles will have to stay on designated routes and trails. “The problem is that there exist no signs telling someone what is a designated route or trail. So, with the monies raised from these funds we can work hand-in-hand with the governmental agencies to make sure such signage exists.”Nevada is the last state to enact an OHV program. “Having experienced how a really well managed program works (Cox was on the OHV board for the state of Colorado before moving to Mesquite), we took a look at all the programs that presently exist and took what we consider the good parts from them and came up with a good compromised law that works for everybody.“And you can see this by the list of all those who support it, from the organized off-highway clubs to organizations like the Sierra Club, cattlemen’s associations, Indian council bureaus, and those who have traditionally been against off-highway use of public lands. They all support this bill because they know the intent is to have a well managed system where people can go enjoy themselves and be safe, while staying out of sensitive areas and maintaining sustainable trails. “And with the Congress cutting the budgets of the Forest Service and BLM, they simply don’t have the manpower or the money to maintain the existing trails.”
The money in the fund will then be allocated through a system of grants. “The grant package will help define the project, as well as having a sign off sheet from the Forest Service and/or BLM. So those wishing funding for these projects will have to work hand-in-hand with these agencies.“
For those wishing to know more about where they can ride around the Mesquite area, they can go to the BLM. But, the funny thing about the BLM is that you will never find anyone in the office that can answer your question. It takes a lot of time and effort to find the rules and regulations.“
Presently, they have just designated and marked what routes in the Gold Butte area are open and closed, and there are a lot of people that are shocked as to what has been closed, and how far they have to walk to access things they use to be able to drive right up to.”
Cox is hopeful that once the legislation goes into effect that a reciprocal effort will exist between Nevada and other states allowing those who buy their tags in Nevada the ability to ride in other states without having to buy additional tags, and vice versa.

Yamaha Launches www.TruthAboutRhino.com

New Site is Resource for Accurate Information; Encourages Enthusiast and Industry Support

CYPRESS, Calif. – June 24, 2009 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., has launched www.TruthAboutRhino.com. The new Web site has been created to provide accurate information about Yamaha and its Rhino Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles, to combat a recent flurry of inaccurate information and negative advertisements targeting the vehicle, and to encourage Rhino customers and the off-road industry to show their support for the SxS segment. From the original 2004 Rhino 660 introduction to present day, TruthAboutRhino.com documents key points in the history of the vehicle. Some sections of the site offer Yamaha’s safety recommendations and product specifications, while others highlight the many awards and accolades that the Rhino has received. Visitors to the site can find Yamaha history and general corporate background, and Rhino customers and enthusiasts can “Rally Around the Rhino” by filling out an online form or emailing messages or questions to: info@truthaboutrhino.com.

“With TruthAboutRhino.com, Yamaha has created a home for accurate information about our company and the Rhino product line, and we’re encouraging our customers and the industry to show their support,” said Steve Nessl, Marketing Manager for Yamaha’s ATV & SxS Group. “We’ve seen a disproportionate amount of negative and inaccurate information distributed recently, so we wanted to create a place where our customers, the general public and the news media can get the real facts.”

The new Web site includes background information on Yamaha and the Rhino, details on the March 31, 2009, Consumer Product Safety Commission repair program announcement (which has been inaccurately described as a recall), and provides a platform for Rhino fans and off-road enthusiasts in general to show their support.“What has been lost in the firestorm of negative, inaccurate information about the Rhino is that the vast majority of our customers and SxS enthusiasts absolutely love their vehicles and its role in pioneering the SxS segment in the industry,” Nessl said. “In reality, statistics show that more than 99 percent of Rhino customers have never reported any claim or incident, a fact never mentioned in the plaintiff attorney ads or Web sites where they troll for new clients. We decided it was time to create a home online for ourselves where accurate information about our vehicle can be found.”Yamaha’s Rhino safety recommendations and guidelines, which are posted on TruthAboutRhino.com, include:
· Drivers must be 16 years or older and have a valid motor vehicle license. Children under 16 should never drive a Rhino.
· To ride in a Rhino, a passenger must be tall enough to place both feet flat on the floorboard with his or her back against the seat back and be able to reach the passenger hand holds.
· Driver and passenger should always wear seatbelts and protective gear/clothing including: Helmet, Eye protection, Gloves, Over-the-ankle boots, Long sleeves and Long pants.
· Drivers and passengers should stay completely inside the vehicle at all times.
· Rhinos are designed for off-road use only. They should never be operated on public roads or paved surfaces.
· As with any motor vehicle, safety features are no substitute for driving responsibly. Avoid aggressive or reckless use of the Rhino.
· For more safety recommendations, please check out the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association web site at: www.rohva.org .

Some customer and fan feedback is also already posted on the site, including a video compilation from the most recent Rhino Rally in Glamis. Yamaha plans to update the site on a regular basis with more news, fun events, photos, videos and comments from the public. “Rhino customers are our biggest supporters and the most enthusiastic about SxS vehicles and Yamaha,” Nessl said. “We look forward to their feedback on the TruthAboutRhino.”

Kawasaki Unveils 2010 KFX 450R ATV

2010 Kawasaki KFX 450R ATV Superior performance with rider-friendly handlingThe KFX®450R is Kawasaki’s sport ATV flagship! Sitting low to the ground on its adjustable suspension with long front A-arms, the KFX450R employs a lightweight and strong aluminium frame and five-speed transmission with reverse to harness the power from its fuel-injected, electric-start engine. Its impressive power and handling allows riders to maximize their performance on the track or in the woods. The race-ready, high performance credentials of the KFX450R begin with a powerplant that’s based on Kawasaki’s highly acclaimed KX™450F motocross engine. It’s fitted with an efficient and highly-responsive 32-bit digital fuel injection (DFI®) system that automatically compensates for temperature or altitude. DFI also enhances the KFX450R’s ability to translate its four-stroke power into outstanding thrust, with easily accessible torque in the low and medium rpm ranges. A lightweight titanium exhaust header pipe and a durable forged piston further refine this 449cc engine’s usability and longevity.
The fast and reliable KFX450R also includes a lightweight reverse gear system integrated with its five-speed manual transmission. The KFX450R’s reverse gear allows riders to quickly and easily extricate themselves from first turn chaos, trail bottlenecks or any other on-track incident.Built to handle tough trail conditions and win races, the KFX450R’s lightweight all-aluminium frame has both incredible stiffness and significant strength. The high-tech chassis also provides a low center of gravity and excellent roll resistance for higher corner speeds and race-level handling. The front suspension design utilizes long lower A-arms mounted to a single box-section lower frame tube and paired with dual-rate front springs for excellent rough-terrain handling. In the rear, an adjustable shock with low- and high-speed compression and rebound damping adjustability is mated to a cast aluminium swingarm that offers the ideal balance of flexibility and rigidity. Regardless of track surfaces or conditions, this race-oriented chassis makes the KFX450R a potent weapon.
The KFX450R is easy to work on, so owners can spend more time in the dirt than in the garage. The two-piece front and rear “lapped” fenders make it easier to customize the size of the fenders or quickly replace damaged sections. Even the headlight assembly is quickly detachable for closed-course races—this ATV looks just as aggressive with or without headlights. These features leave little doubt that the KFX450R was designed to be on the track and winning races as quickly as possible.
Owners can customize their KFX450R, using a full line of Authentic Kawasaki Accessories from their local Kawasaki dealer. As with all off-highway vehicle recreation, Kawasaki encourages ATV riders to ride responsibly and to respect the environment. Kawasaki will pay first-time buyers of a new Kawasaki ATV $100 for completing an ATV rider safety course conducted by the ATV Safety Institute (ASI). Muzzys Whisper Cores now available for Rhino, Teryx and RZR

Excessively loud OHV exhaust noise is one of the most contentious land-use issue facing riders today, and Muzzys is doing its part to help. Muzzys Whisper Core Inserts are now available for Yamah Rhino, Kawasaki Teryx and Polaris RZR Dual Exhaust. These cores replace the standard Muzzys Quiet Core and slide inside each Muzzy canister. The Whisper Cores offer a 3-4 dBA noise reduction over their already quiet exhaust. This is a significant reduction because with every 3dBA reduction, the human ear perceives the sound level cut in half.
Available UTV Whisper Cores:

The Muzzys Whisper Cores retail for $79.95.

With a Muzzys Dual Exhaust plus Whisper Core inserts in your UTV, Maximum performance can be acheived at Minimum sound levels. Help preserve and protect OHV recreational opportunities for future generations by keeping sound output to a minimum.

New E-Series Amber LED Light a Must Have for Dust and Fog

Mesa, AZ – Rigid Industries new Amber E-Series LED led the Bradley Racing Class 8 truck to a first place finish in the Dos Mares 500 held in La Paz, Mexico. The Dos Mares 500 has a long history in Baja California Sur desert offroad racing and if the grueling course wasn’t enough of a test, heavy dust at night was.
“The dust was so thick that Class 1 cars that started in front of us had to slow down,” said Tom Bradley. “I turned off all lights except our new amber LED, and was able to pass all but three Class 1 cars in heavy dust. With a fourth place finish overall, everything has to fall into place just right. The amber LED lights made the difference this time for Bradley Racing.”
The new amber light is the newest addition to the E-Series family of LEDs made by Rigid Industries. The E-Series Amber LED shines just as far as the regular E-Series LED, but in an amber color to reduce the glare from dust or fog.
E-series LED lights are available in 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 inch lengths and just like all E-Series LEDs, the new Amber series is one of the toughest and most dependable LED lights on the market.
Whether you drive a UTV in the fog at Pismo, a sand car in the dust in Glamis or a Class 8 truck in heavy dust during the Dos Mares 500, the E-Series Amber LED from Rigid Industries will help you navigate through the low visibility conditions.

About Rigid Industries:
As the manufacturer of the E-series LED light bars, the brightest and most efficient LED light, Rigid Industries has raised the bar on lighting technology for off-road vehicles.Rigid Industries is located in Mesa, Arizona and can be reached by phone at 480.655.0100 or on the internet at www.rigidindustries.com

Be prepared when riding All-terrain vehicles

By Lynn R. Blamires

All-terrain vehicles have been singled out in numerous press accounts this month as being extremely dangerous. Accidents involving ATVs have been the cause of several tragic deaths, including that of former U.S. Rep. Bill Orton, while others have been seriously injured.
One writer suggested that ATVs are dangerous even when people ride them carefully. A critical review of the accidents this spring reveals an element of carelessness in every case. Whether it is the unfamiliar nature of our sand dunes, riding double on machines not designed for two, riding too fast on unfamiliar trails or allowing an inexperienced rider to use a machine, people are not being careful, and the results have been fatal.
Should ATVs be singled out as an exclusive target? Let's look at other outdoor activities. Several incidents have occurred this year where rescue crews have been called out to get people off mountains. Hikers have gone out unprepared for changing elements and have suffered as a result. People have been caught in storms while driving cars or trucks in the backcountry. Hunting accidents happen every year. Snowmobile accidents are in the news every winter. Skiing accidents and even deaths on our winter mountains are not uncommon. Incidents have also been reported in the use of ultra-light aircraft and hang gliders. I maintain that there is a level of training and skill required in all outdoor activities to reduce the risk.
The common denominator in all of these events is the lack of experience when participating in activities outside of our element. As our Utah seasons change, the activities associated with each season come to life. The fact that there has been a season of dormancy for each activity implies a need to get back in shape for participation. A marathon runner doesn't show up on the starting line in Boston without months of preparation. Even marathons are not without incident.
Is our approach to the outdoor activities we enjoy too casual? Are we thorough in our preparation or do we become overanxious in our desire to open the season and overlook proper preparation to safely enjoy the activity? It would be interesting to compare the opening of the season for each outdoor activity to its closing, to observe any change in the incident rate. It is already proven that more accidents happen on our highways during the first snowfall of the season than during the last storm in the spring.
All the training and preparation doesn't completely eliminate the element of risk inherent in any activity outside of our element. The mountain men of early America were more prepared for many of the activities we attempt on weekends because they were in their element. We are not.
Riding ATVs requires a level of skill that is tragically overlooked. The activity is not one that can be casually approached. It is not the machine that is dangerous but the irresponsible rider who is not safely participating in an outdoor activity.
As an ATV enthusiast, I regret each and every accident, and especially each and every death that occurs in our great out-of-doors. I urge everyone who seeks to be involved in activities outside their normal element to prepare for the season. Know and participate in all the safe practices and preparation related to the activity you choose. We all want to come home from an outing full of excitement and good memories and not full of regrets and thoughts of what we should have done.

Lynn R. Blamires is president of the Northern Utah ATV Trail Riders.

Could California's Budget Crisis Close Oceano Dunes SVRA?

Because the state of California is in "crisis," forced to bridge a $24.3 billion budget shortfall that may in fact be a $27 billion shortfall, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed a long list of spending cuts. Among the proposals is closing State Parks and Oceano Dunes SVRA is a State Park.
Closing State Parks would only save California's general fund about $150 million at a time when it's facing a $24 billion crisis.
Although closing state parks would be extremely unpopular, it would make the environmentalist jump for joy if Oceano Dunes was closed to OHVs.

A few news articles:
If you enjoy riding OHVs at Oceano Dunes SVRA, take the time to let the Governor and Legislators know that Oceano Dunes should not be on the list of potential closure sites.
